Effectiveness of Using a Wiki:
From Wikitechbook--the student-developed, technology textbook
Evaluate in light of meeting objectives
To be successful with your wiki, you need to meet clearly articulated objectives. You must know why you are writing and to whom you are writing. For this wiki, my objectives are for you to (1) experience technology that will be useful to you in your classroom, (2) address the concepts we study in this class so that these concepts will be useful to you when you are a teacher, and (3) develop a textbook that will appeal to next semester's students with the ultimate goal of not needing a technology textbook in the future. This wiki will be successful if it meets these objectives. In order to meet these objectives, I have developed clear criteria and a grading rubric. My ultimate measure of success will be the response of next semester's students as they read, respont to, and add to the wiki each semester.
Editing a wiki
For a wiki to be successful, you will need to know what your objectives are, but you will also need to be willing to edit. PBwiki has researched what makes a wiki successful and has found that it is the willingness to edit another person's work. To be successful writers, we have to act like writers. Good writers are constantly trying to say something better and more clearly.
So, put yourself in the world of a writer and enjoy working together as a team to say something the best way possible for your intended audience. Your audience is next semester's students.
Better yet, encourage your team to edit your work--that way it is easier on everyone to come up with the best product possible.
Wiki challenges
To successfully use a wiki instead of a textbook in high school and college classes, it is important to address challenges of developing a collaborative wiki and to provide model rubrics and grading ceriteria, formatting template, and suggestions for student logs and efficient monitoring of student work.
Wiki history and accountability
PBwiki will automatically keep a record of every edit. This makes it possible for you to changeback to an earlier version of a page if necessary. Just click "history" at the bottom of your wiki to see your revisions. Make sure that you log in with your name so that I can see who has made changes and as a way to verify that you have worked in the wiki.
