From Wikitechbook--the student-developed, technology textbook
According to Webopedia, multimedia is the use of computers to present text, graphics, video, animation, and sound in an intergrated way. Some of these media will be addressed on this page. One topic that will be discussed in particular is the benefits of hypermedia. Hypermedia is a link that takes the user to graphics, audio, visual or additional text to aid in the presenting of a topic more effectively. The emergence of innovative technology will also be discussed on this page, as well as the many uses that are available in the classroom through technology.
A Vision of K-12 Students Today
Benefits of Multimedia in the Classroom
Multimediais a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video and interactive content forms. Multimedia is presented (most of the time) in more than one medium. Using different types of media in the classroom can help to enhance student learning. Students learn differently and providing them with different media will appeal to students who are visual, kinesthetic, or audio learners. Using multimedia can provide endless opportunities for teachers to keep their classroom new and interesting for diverse learners. Some types of media that can be used in the classroom could be PowerPoints that are made by the teacher, different types of software, and the internet to look up information about projects done inside of the classroom, along with other endless possibilities.
Multimedia is not often looked upon as a viable teaching tool in the physical education classroom. Whether it's because of inadequate facilities, funds, or lack of teacher training needed to effectively use multimedia, it has fallen to the wayside in the physical education department. In this article, use of technology in the physical education classroom will be discussed and the benefits to learning that can be achieved by using this technology in the physical education classroom. This article goes in depth into the factors that go into the use of multimedia in the physical education classroom and the reasons why some teachers my not use multimedia or use it effectively. While not entirely in the classroom, many sports teams in highschool and college have begun to use digital copies of game film to replace the hard copies of VHS tapes once used to watch film. The access to new multimedia programs that allow the coaches to convert their game film into digital files has revolutionized the way coaches are breaking down their films to coach their teams. By using an overhead projector, film can be displayed for everyone to see instead of just using a VCR and TV like VHS requires you to do. Using laptops and portable harddrives, coaches can take the game film with them on the road or to any place the team might need to watch film. Other devices that are becomging popular for coaches to have are hand held electronic devices. These are used in several situations for things such as taking stats during games, scouting other teams play, and recording useful information to look back at when needed. Another thing that is being done in college baseball is the use of computer programs that compare major league baseball players' swings to college and high school athletes. The way that this program works is that a player's swing is video taped and then plugged into the program. Once in the program a coach can set up the player's swing next to an MLB player's swing using split screen. The two players' swings are synced up so that they start at the same time and this way a coach can analyze their player's swing and find if there is anything wrong with it.
Multimedia Uses in the K-3 Classroom
One of my favorite new ways to use the internet is for author studies. Not only can you learn about the authors and their books, sometimes you can listen to them read their own stories. One of the sites I use the most is Robert Munsch's. Kids have so much fun listening to him and remember his stories when they hear it this way.
Benefits of Hypermedia in the Classroom
Hypermedia is digital text that can be useful in the classroom setting for both teachers and students. Hypermedia comes from the word hypertext. Hypermedia extends the idea of the hypertext link, which helps anyone to add multimedia objects into a web page or a page onto a document. The hypertext was the main idea that led to the invention of the World Wide Web, which can be explained as containing a large amount of information about anything a person would want to learn about. Hypermedia enables a classroom to get sound, motion video and virtual reality from several sources. Multimedia development software such as Adobe Flash, Adobe Director, Macromedia Authorware, and MatchWare Mediator may be used to create stand-alone hypermedia applications, with emphasis on entertainment content. Hypermedia essentially changes the method of presention from linear facts to inquiry. This form of technology could change the way that textbooks are used, in that it changes the way content is addressed. It aides students that may not understand all the information that they need by just looking at a book. Overall, hypermedia is proving itself as a useful tool in the classroom.
Innovative Multimedia
Innovative multimedia involves a groundbreaking look into the future of education. New and creative multimedia technology can help students with difficulties in class and measure their improvement. Innovative multimedia also provides teachers with challenging activities to wrap their minds around. Most classrooms are managed around one type of learning style, in which the teacher gives a lecture to the class. A learner-centered technology will change education for the better. One of these technologies are (PLE's) Personal Learning Environments. These learning environments lead students on their individual learning style pathway.Doing so will address the learning styles of all individuals in the classroom.Education through virtual reality is also being developed for education and training. Realistic environments could be accessed through live 3 dimensional vision in new computer models. A museum can be at the finger tips of a group of students who want to see more than a picture in a textbook!
