Need a Wiki?

From Wikitechbook--the student-developed, technology textbook

Why have a wiki? It is based on a need. This wikitechbook began because I needed a briefer, less expensive, more up-to-date, interesting and engaging textbook for my Technology for Educators course. I began to dream of my ideal textbook, with hypertext like wikipedia and student-developed videos. My interest grew out of my need and desire for something specific.

Who needs a Wiki?

Teachers are turning to wikis to meet their need. They may not need a textbook, but anytime teachers need to publish information for general access for parents, students, or administrators, they should consider whether a wiki would meet their needs. PBwiki offers many ideas. PBwiki also shows different ways educators use their wiki sites.

  1. Wiki websites: St. Francois Xavier Community School
  2. Wiki syllabus, course shell, and instructions to student:
  3. Teach with a wiki: "Teachers First" provides ideas for math, science, social studies, and younger students
  4. Wiki class newsletters
  5. Wiki individual student portfolios: Use a wiki to display student work for parent viewing and as a way to provide an authentic writing opportunities.Westwood Schools
  6. Collaborative work: by teachers, by students (this wiki is an example)
  7. Wiki Teacher portfolios:
  8. Distance learning support: E-learning by US News
  9. Platform for presentation that is available and editable wherever there is Internet.
