Text Elements

From Wikitechbook--the student-developed, technology textbook

This page is designed to give information on important qualities of text on professional websites. Text is an important factor for a website viewer. The text must be clear, concise, and compliment the look of the page.

Text Readability

As users of the Internet, we know that the text on the page is very important. The readability of the site determines the audience, whether that be children, teens, adults, or professionals. As a website creator, it is essential to think about text size, color, and font. It is essential that the website is accessible for the reader to locate key concepts, and the site should appear to have valuable information. Viewers are more inclined to use the site and possibly visit again if all these components are present and well instilled.

Text Size

It is important that text be a size that is easy to read for all viewers. Reading on a computer can be slower than if reading text on paper, so it is important that the text be an appropriate size. For most readers, size 14-point font is a perfect size. Headings and subheadings are used to point out key elements to the reader, which are often larger than the normal text size. A change in size or spacing might also let the reader know that a new section might be beginning. Characteristics like bolding, underlining, and italicizing can also be a great way to show the reader something important.

Text Font

It is important to use a font style that is easy to read. Verdana, Ariel, and Georgia are recommended to be a few of the best. Times New Roman is not always seen as a great website font; it is often hard to read on some websites. So, avoiding difficult fonts will promise that your visitor come back to see the site again. It is important that the font is easy to read for all viewers.

Text Color

Color is a great way to add character to a website. However, its important to keep the viewers eyes in mind. When choosing text colors, it is important to apply easy-to-read colors. Bright colors may look fun, but are often seen as difficult to read. Many people struggle with white text on black/dark backgrounds. Also, be sure to find colors that will work for all viewers, by using complimentary colors within the entire website.

When creating a website, it is important to think of the website's visitor when choosing text and it's various characteristics. Think of how the colors, size, and font will influence the site. The general appeal, readability, and information can determine the importance of the site. Make sure that the viewer doesn't leave the website for lack of visual elements. For other tips on how to keep viewers coming back to you website visit here.
