Alternate text can be numerous things.  Pictures, text symbols, applets, charts and numerous other elements are samples of alternate texts.  When viewing a website, we don't usually think about all the text we see on a page.  Many websites have advertising, sponsors, captions under pictures, and even more text on a page than the viewer actually reads.  But subconsciously that text impacts the viewer, even though they might not think it does.  More information about this can be found at this website.
